There is no Teddy Bear God that we can snuggle up to when the going gets tough. That Teddy Bear God is for sale by every television ministry and in a large majority of pulpits around the world. In a real sense, that God is a lie, some of the people know it but most devotees don’t know any better. God did not bring this world into being in order to get cozy. We humans value a family support system; God is an adult; God values freedom.
God is an
earthly influencer not a dictator. God decides when and where God will pull a
couple of strings in our world. God decides; we don’t. Prayer changes us not
God. God acts to allows even the monsters freedom. God acts without partiality,
he or she is not flipping the channels on Sunday morning. God picks on the
nobodies, avoiding the well qualified. The prophet Samuel, led by the spirit of
God, reluctantly chose the 12th son, the tail end of the family,
David, to be King for the people. God directed the assassin’s bullet to miss in
Butler, Pennsylvania.
